Bylaws Committee Report Submitted By Nancy Bentz Chair
Florida State Organization Bylaws’ Committee Submitted By: Nancy Bentz, Chair I would like to thank the esteemed committee members for their sharing of knowledge and support. Our members are Sam King, Ruth Burrell, Marilyn Freeman, Mary Jo Holleran, Dr. Helen Popovich, Dr. Charlotte Johnson-Davis and our consultant, Pat Eckstein. Our goals for this biennium include:
Ensure state bylaws comply with international bylaws;
Provide example chapter rules using a fillable form;
Become more familiar with our international documents;
Gain and share knowledge about parliamentary procedures; and
Teach our members about the use of motions and amendments.
As part of our commitment to our president’s biennial Florida State theme, Take the Lead - Be a ChangeMaker, the committee will use technology to provide resources to our members.
Special NOTE: We all will be affected by significant changes to our state’s governing documents and chapter rules. An international task force is in the process of revising the international governing documents. It will merge the current Constitution and International Standing Rules into a single set of International Bylaws. Some changes propose modification of current membership and financial provisions designed to strengthen the Society and increase its impact on education worldwide. In December, a preliminary draft was made available on the DKG website and sent to chapter presidents asking them to forward this draft to their members. Members had a brief time to provide suggestions in response to the draft. Members’ suggestions were sent to the task force. The task force is currently reviewing members’ suggestions before it prepares the final draft for publication in the March/April DKG NEWS. The final draft will be considered for adoption at the 2026 international convention. Town Hall meetings will be announced at dkg.org so you may understand the proposed changes.
Committee Responsibilities and Duties:
According to the Bylaws themselves, the main focus is to draft bylaws changes and present them for approval of the members at the State convention. This committee has a prescribed membership and must consist of 2 State officers; one past State president; and 3 members of the Society who are serving or have served as chapter presidents. The parliamentarian serves as an ex officio member, without vote.
